Swagging Soars!
As we approach Yandeyarra after two days travelling north east from Perth with a trailer bursting with camping supplies, I’m again blown away by the stunning natural beauty of this dramatic ancient landscape.
Emerging from the endless flat plains, the green and rust coloured ranges reveal themselves like sleeping ancestors, while groaning road trains boast the spoils of the vast mineral wealth that lies beneath.
In a few hours we’ll be greeted by my dear friend Margie Stewart who has everything in readiness from her side, for our arrival. Like me, Margie, Irene, Stephen and their family have been preparing for this for eight years.
We launch Swagging On Country with two groups on June 8. A three night Women’s Program, followed by the first one night two day Corporate Program.
Four generations of Margie’s family will welcome Swagging participants On Country. To land their ancestors have cared and spoken for, for thousands of years. They now share their country with a handful of prominent mining companies.
While staying true to their values, The Stewart Family is working collaboratively with those mining forces impacting their home. Key to their success is their honouring of traditional culture and their open hearts and minds.
As Margie says, Swagging On Country is her elder Mother Irene’s wish. Irene and her 103 year old husband Stephen Stewart, want to welcome visitors to share their Aboriginal ways and wisdom, and experience how precious this land is.
In particular, Margie is excited to welcome mining company groups so they can immerse in her family’s culture. One significant aspect is to help them understand why Aboriginal mining workers need to take time out for lore and sorry time. That they’re not slacking off, and communing with loved ones for these important rituals nourishes and sustains them and their community deeply.
It is Margie’s hope that one of the outcomes of Swagging will be to continue to deepen current Australians’ understanding of the value of Aboriginal culture.
Our inaugural Swagging season calendar runs from June to September this year, and we’re delighted to share that apart from a few spots left for our individual September 23-26th program, we are booked out!
Bookings are now open for 2023, so reach out on LinkedIn or geraldine@grgconsulting.com.au.
We’d love you to join us Swagging On Country!
